The CHAMP program is designed to improve balance and mobility and decrease falls in older adults and people with disabilities. The program is based on the Otago Exercise Programme, which is recognized by the Centers for Disease Control as an effective fall prevention program. CHAMP is for anyone who has concerns about balance or falling, and is offered free of charge. Teams of nursing and physical therapy faculty, clinicians, and students, along with EMS personnel, perform an in-depth assessment of risk factors for falls and specific recommendations for reducing risk. Each participant receives an individualized exercise program that he/she performs at home. Participants who are at increased risk of falling receive follow-up for one year.
