The Arthritis Foundation Tai Chi Program is based on the Australian Tai Chi for Arthritis program, which is designed to improve the lifestyle for people with arthritis. Originally created by Dr. Paul Lam, a world-renowned Tai Chi teacher and family physician, it utilizes Sun style Tai Chi, one of the 4 major recognized styles of Tai Chi. This style is particularly effective for people with arthritis because it includes agile steps and exercises that may improve mobility, breathing and relaxation. In addition, the movements have higher stances, which makes it easier to learn.
How is the program structured?
The program itself consists of twelve movements (6 basic and 6 advanced), a warm up and a cool down using Sun style of Tai Chi exercises. Once becoming familiar with the 12 movements, the program is designed to provide continual challenge by reversing the direction of the movements.
Who can participate?
Any individual with impaired joint motion and/or strength.
Who leads the classes?
Only persons who have successfully completed an Arthritis Foundation Tai Chi Leader Training Workshop led by an approved trainer are allowed to teach the course.
